Window Bird Feeders


Window bird feeders are perhaps the best way to view the birds in your backyard up close. Bird lovers who live in apartment buildings, those in nursing home or can't get outside easily will love getting up close and personal with nature through their window bird feeder. Since nearly all types of birds will use a window bird feeder, having one will provide hours of enjoyment as you watch birds throughout the year feasting right before your eyes. Some wonder about pesky squirrels getting the bird feed. It's true that a determined squirrel can just about get any food supply he or she sets their minds on. But it has been reported that most squirrels shy away from window bird feeders. The proximity to the house and windows seem to scare the squirrels.

Window bird feeders come in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes. The size you need depends on how many birds you have at the feeder at one time as well as how often you will want to replenish the feeder. For the elderly who need friends or family members to refill the feeder, a larger model might be best.

There are several kinds of window bird feeders. Some are attached directly to a window via suction cups or clips or even Velcro. (Some worry about the strength of the devices. But they usually are made to hold not only the bird feed but a number of birds as well). Other window bird feeders can be placed inside a windowsill and secured with a variety of methods.

Once you have purchased a window bird feeder you will need to decide which window to place it in. It's best to select a window that you can view easily. Perhaps near the table where you eat most of your meals. Also keep in mind what part of your house is frequented by birds. A quiet back yard would be preferred to a window in the front of the house if you live on a busy street. It doesn't matter what time of year you start using your bird feeder, although you'll probably get more action if you start in the spring or fall of the year.

Sometimes it takes a little patience before the birds in your neighborhood will begin using your window bird feeder. Always make sure that the bird seed you are serving is for the birds that are indigenous to your area. Avoid using mixes that are to attract only certain species. Then sit back and wait, it may take up to a month before the birds in your area discover their new found feeding ground of your window bird feeder. But don't worry, once they find it they will be back time to your window bird feeder, time and time again.

You should consider purchasing a number of window bird feeders one for every great viewing window in your home. Don't forget to give window bird feeders to a friend or family member. The enjoyment that you will receive viewing birds up close is hard to imagine. A window bird feeder is especially nice for a shut in or a friend who can't get out much.
