About the Solar Sipper Bird Bath

 

Winged visitors will hang around your place more often when they find clean, clear water in your yard with this bird bath. This solar-powered bird bath keeps water drinkable in winter and fresh in summer. An ingenious solar panel cover insulates the water to retain its temperature. A 1.5-inch diameter opening lets birds freely drink. Plus, the water stays cleaner because dirt and debris have a harder time getting inside.

 

Simply fill the bowl with water, place the solar cover over the top, and place it in a spot that receives plenty of direct sunlight. You may want to place the Solar Sipper in a shady spot for the summer so the heating element does not kick on.

My outside birds took to this solar sipper right away. I have it in full sunshine near the bird feeders, and it does keep the water liquid. As you would expect with a "solar" sipper, you do need to keep it in the sun during freezing weather to keep the water from freezing.

There is no solar equipment in this thing, it simply relies on the heat of the sun, the red color of the sides, and a lid that covers most of the surface to hold in the heat of the day. They recommend that you take it in at night and put it out again in the morning. Well, it's not expensive and won't eat up my electric bill! Hopefully it really WILL perform down to 20 degrees. Won't know until January!

    I didn't expect much from this simple design, but I'm disappointed even so. Despite being in full sun all day at 50 degrees, the water froze during a 25-degree night, well above the advertised temperature. The price seems high for what amounts to two plastic bowls and a lid, and while the waterer is located between two busy feeders, birds haven't discovered it in two weeks.

    Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

      I'm still waiting for the birds to come to the water supply. There are plenty of birds at feeders, and snow is on the ground, so the birds should be attracted to the water. I am disappointed that I have not seen the birds drinking water. I received this on the afternoon of the 14th of January. This is the 16th. Perhaps the birds will come soon. When I took the bird bath in before dark on the 15th (1st full day of using the feeder), the water was cold, but not frozen. It was not cold earlier. I would not recommend this to a friend unless I see the water keeping warm on a sunny day or that birds do come to the feeder. Then I would be happy to recommend this.

      No means to secure it. In bad weather it will not stay put. Not good below 20 degrees and again, it is very difficult to take apart. So far not one bird has used it and we placed it in the regular bird bath.

      I tried one of these outside in Minnesota, it did not keep the water thawed even down to 20 above. I tried it with the heater and never got it to work. Sorry.
