The Smart Solar Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath is still available as a regular solar-powered bird bath, but now you have the option of enhancing it with On Demand solar power!
You asked for it, and we delivered!
Customer satisfaction is our top priority, so when you told us you were disappointed with solar fountains that wouldn't hold a charge, we went looking for some that did. Unlike other solar fountains that only run when the sun is shining, these new fountains with revolutionary On Demand technology work when you want them to. The solar panel on this fountain stores energy so you can run it when it's cloudy or even at night. We're very excited to be the only ones to offer you this fantastic product, and we hope you'll love it as much as we do.

About this fountain
Birds prefer a fountain over a birdbath like people prefer a shower over a tub. The water looks and feels fresher when it recirculates. The Smart Solar Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath Fountain is the most popular bird sanctuary in the neighborhood. The tickling sound of the fountain soothes nerves and eases your mind, just like those feng shui masters promised. It's perfectly self-contained and low-maintenance, with no plumbing or electricity needed. The solar-powered pump recirculates water through the built-in reservoir. The 2-inch-deep fountain bowl is perfect for frolicking birds and only requires about a gallon of water. Your tree-hugger friends will be impressed.
Moving water is fresher, naturally resisting mosquitoes and algae. A built-in filter keeps water clear, just clean it every month or so. The included 2-inch extender tube can be added to increase the fountain height. We recommend that you store the bird bath inside during the winter.
The included solar panel with the On Demand option boasts a self-contained battery and easy-to-use on/off switch. When the switch is in the on position, the pump will run as usual, but will utilize the battery when clouds pass over. Excess power will be stored in the battery, too, to keep the fountain operating when the sun sets. When the switch is in the off position, the fountain will store all solar power gathered during the day in the battery for uninterrupted use after the sun goes down. In direct sunlight, the battery can fully charge in one day, and a full battery will function for up to six hours at night.
Special Note: Solar bird baths and fountains require plenty of direct sunlight to operate properly. Please be sure to have a sunny spot to place your bath or fountain. Also, the pump must never be operated dry (out of water). Dry operation permanently damages the pump.

Troubleshooting tips for all solar pumps:
1. Remove filter cap from bottom of pump (has Brillo-like pad attached).
2. Remove the impeller piece that resembles a fan blade from the metal shaft.
3. Blow into the pump to remove any dust or debris.
4. Clean off the metal shaft with a cotton rag or tissue.
5. Re-insert the impeller back onto the metal shaft just like it was removed.
6. Connect the panel power cord to the pump.
7. Hold the panel up to the sunlight, and hold the pump to your ear to listen for motor noise.
8. Place the pump underwater and give the pump 1-5 minutes to engage itself.

I decided to try a solar powered birdbath made out of resin since it would be easier to clean. Last year I purchased a birdbath made out of aluminum, and it was painted; it uses a 110 volt pump. I buried a power cable underground with a timer to turn the pump on and off and that worked great. I also bought a DIG EZ Program Hose End Timer that fits on a faucet and uses a 9 volt battery to add water to my birdbath four times a day. I ran underground a 1/2 inch drip hose and then tapped into it with a 1/4 drip tube and three 4 gallon emitters. I have set the timer to add water for a minute to top off the water in my birdbath. In the summer, I increase the timer to run for 2 minutes. This is an excellent way to add water to your birdbath. After all the work I did, I was very disappointed that after three months the paint started to chip off of this birdbath, and it was awful to clean. At that time I thought of replacing it with a resin birdbath but decided to wait.I have seen the reviews of the Portsmouth birdbath, and most were very positive and decided to buy it. [...] I had it in place in less than 20 minutes. Since it runs on solar power, all I had to do was tap into my drip tubing and add another line to this birdbath. As the DIG timer goes on, it fills both birdbaths and I never have to worry about them getting low on water.I placed my Portsmouth birdbath in the front yard but have a small Pygmy Date Palm about four feet away from the birdbath. I have noticed with fall approaching that when the sun hits the solar panel at 9 AM I start to see the pump working, and by 3 PM the birdbath is shaded by the palm and the fountain stops working. I don’t mind that because I still have my other birdbath, and the birds still come to this one to bathe and drink water. I found that the spray head scared away the birds and so I just have the water bubble from the top.I have been really happy with this birdbath until last week when the pump stopped working. I cleaned the pump and impeller twice, and it still does not work. I have only used this for two weeks, and I am very disappointed that such a great product has such a cheap faulty pump.I called Smart Solar the company that makes the pump, and they said that they will mail me a replacement but that it is on backorder [...] !It is very bad that a company puts out a nice quality birdbath and then supplies a cheap pump. [...] I have decided to buy another pump to use for now until my replacement pump comes in. I decided to order a pump with a separated solar panel that I can put out in the sun to get power to the pump for a longer period of time.I have some photos of the birds bathing in the birdbath that was taken out of my front window. Overall, I like the birdbath and the resin material. It is easy to clean and will not be a problem like my painted birdbath is. I would recommend this product, but hopefully they will make an improvement in the pump design so that it will last longer than two weeks.

Comments about Smart Solar Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath Fountain:
I was surprised it arrived really so fast than the expected date. Thank you. It's working perfectly fine hoping that'll continue working fine for the years to come. We enjoy watching the red cardinals, blue jays, humming birds take a bath on the bird bath fountain everyday. Our birdbath looks exactly in the picture surrounded with different flowers and colors. Very nice and fountain works so well when the sun is up and it stops when the sun sets but the birds are perching up on the trees by then....the reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because there was no "connector" found in the package. The black connector that connects to the pump as shown in the illustration/instruction pamphlet. We just assembled it...figured everything out and it just works. Thinking of getting the same solar birdbath sometime:)

Q1: How much water does this bowl hold?
A: This bowl holds about 1 gallon of water.
Q2: Can the spray pattern be altered?
A: Yes, there is a 2 inch extender tube at the base that can be removed to decrease the distance the water shoots out.
Q3: Is this solar panel attached to the bird bath or can you set it up a few feet away?
A: The solar panel must sit in the bowl of the bird bath. It is the dark square that is shown in the picture.
Q4: Does this pump get bogged down by a lot of build-up or by being in a high humidity environment?
A: This pump does have a filter to prevent build-up. However, it should still be cleaned every month or two, depending on the level of build-up.
Q5: Is the pump replaceable if it breaks?
A: The pump is replaceable.
