De-icer
Wild birds require a source of open water year-round for drinking and bathing, so the Allied Precision Deluxe Birdbath Heater and De-icer allows you to provide ice-free water in any bird bath. The unit is energy-efficient and features multiple thermostatic sensors so that water maintains the appropriate temperature. It heats the water to 58-60°F and will turn off. When the temperature gets down to 43°F, it will turn on and begin heating the water. The aluminum construction means that the de-icer will run cooler than other de-icers on the market. The included 10-foot cord allows more flexibility to place your birdbath in hard to reach places during the winter months. Add your own extension cord for increased range. However, due to potential power loss, the manufacturer discourages connecting this product to extension cords longer than 15 feet in length. A stainless steel guard shields your wild birds from direct contact with the heating element, and a rear-exit power cord gives the de-icer a low profile in the bird bath. This de-icer is safe to use in ceramic, concrete, and plastic bird baths. Made in the USA.

We live in southwest PA and are buried in over 2 feet of snow right now. Standing water won't stayed thawed. I hated seeing the birds having to eat snow to get fluid, while my bird bath was buried under the snow. I plugged this gadget in,dropped it in, and waited. It's been plugged in out there for about 24 hours and no sign of ice accumilation at all, just nice, fresh water. I felt the water, it's cold, it doesn't warm it up, just keeps it from freezing. It won't win any beauty contests, but it sure does the job and is worth the price. I've only had it for a little over a day, so I can't say anything about how long it will last, but any reputable company would replace a defective device. Otherwise, as far as I can see, it's great. If I needed another one, I would buy it again.

Comments about Allied Precision BDT250 Deluxe 250 Watt Bird Bath Heater and De-icer:
I have fed birds in my backyard for years but have never had a year round birdbath. I decided it was time to do something about this. I read the online reviews about this heater and ordered it. It arrived quickly and set up was simple. I had an ice free bird bath within a few hours and the birds have been visiting it daily. So far so good as I just ordered it this past Monday (2/18/13) and it is only Friday! I hope it will last for many years.

Just recently had a below zero day and it was heating right along. The birds were very happy to have water again. This is the first time using this style so do not know the durability yet

Comments about Allied Precision BDT250 Deluxe 250 Watt Bird Bath Heater and De-icer:
Bird bath heater/de-icer is working great. After reading other reviews, I purchased a 15-ft outdoor extension cord to use with it. Reviews/ads noted that longer cords risked loss of functionality. What I hadn't been aware of (maybe my fault if I missed it in the advertisement....not sure), was the DESIGNATION IN THE INSTRUCTIONS to only use a grounded GFI outlet (what you have in kitchen/bath/deck). I didn't have a GFI outlet anywhere near where the birdbath would be located. I asked a licensed electrician if he thought it was necessary or "over-kill" as a requirement since the outlet I'd be running the extension cord to was INSIDE MY GARAGE. He assured me that a regular grounded outlet INDOORS would be just fine. The unit only comes with a 10-foot cord but you lose 2-3 ft length for the height of your birdbath. So there was no way I'd be able to plug it in without the 15 ft ext cord. So far there has been no problem at all. It's a shallow birdbath and the de-icer kept the water from freezing even in 10 degree (sleeting) weather. By the way, a robin actually jumped in and took a splash bath within 20 minutes of setting up the de-icer in the bird bath. I grabbed my camera and took a few pics. We had freezing temps for over a week before I rec'd the de-icer. I've enjoyed watching a very busy birdbath ever since setting up the de-icer. LOVE IT !!! Also, shipment cheapest way arrived in just 3 biz days. GREAT! (REALLY HOPING IT'S DURABLE & KEEPS WORKING !!!)

Comments about Allied Precision BDT250 Deluxe 250 Watt Bird Bath Heater and De-icer:
I put the heater on a solidly frozen birdbath at 7 A.M. Sunday Morning using a "not recomended" extension cord. I got back from church at 11:oo A.M. and all that ice was now water and the birds were having ball. This heater replaced the 40 watt cable in foil unit that failed due to the insulation getting compromised inside the foil. My friend saw our new heater yesterday and say they order two for their birdbaths and one for the dog's water dish. Remember, GFCI!

Q1: Will this work in a metal shallow bath?
A: As long as it is fully covered by water it will work fine.
Q2: Can I use a heavy duty extension cord with this bath?
A: Yes you can use it but if is over 15 to 20 foot is not going to work because you loose power and won't allow you to turn it on.
Q3: What is the "appropriate temperature" at which this heater is designed to keep the water? Thank you.
A: The heater/de-icer will turn on once the water reaches 45 degrees.
Q4: What are the dimensions?
A: The dimensions are 7.5L x 2.75W x 1H inches
Q5: How does one clean off deposits from the heater / de-icer?
A: As a first step, our supplier suggests soaking the unit in vinegar and if you need to do more they suggest using a product like CLR or Lime Away to clean deposits from the heater / de-icer.
