Description

Keep that bird bath ice-free all winter with an inconspicuous deicer. The Farm Innovators Decorative Bird Bath De-Icer Heated Rock is a bird bath heater that does not look out of place. This cast aluminum artificial rock has an economical, low-Watt heater built-in to keep your bird bath from freezing completely over even in sub-zero temperatures. This de-icer features 75 Watts of power and is thermostatically controlled to operate only when temperatures fall below 35 degrees Fahrenheit, saving you money. The durable cast aluminum shell has a natural color that fits in with virtually all bird baths, but it can be painted to match any surrounding. This de-icer is safe to use with all bird baths.

    We have used this about a week. It was the only heater we could find that fit in our small, oddly shaped ceramic bird bath. It has worked perfectly and it has kept the water open, even this morning when it was 11 below zero with a wind chill of about 25 below!! Once the birds got used to the cord (maybe it looked like a snake?), they loved it. I saw 3 goldfinches and a tufted titmouse on it at the same time, and a cardinal nearby.

    I purchased this heater to replace another heater that had lasted 8 years. This one made it through 2008 with no troubles but when I installed it for this winter it no longer functioned.

      I am a hobbyist beekeeper and gardener. To ensure my bees have a clean water source year-round, I use a large glazed terra cotta flower pot base (just the base) with stones in it (bees can't swim so need rocks to cling to as they drink) as a ground-level water source in front of the hive. This low-voltage bird bath de-icer is just perfect for keeping the bee water from freezing. The birds of course use it, too.

        As Spring approaches in our area (2 1/2 mi. from Canadian border - MN) we have freezing nights and 40 - 55 degree days. We set up the bird bath, put in the heater and plugged it in. A couple of days later, went out and the bath was frozen. After checking out a couple of things, realized we had forgotten to turn on outlet outside. Within a couple of hours, it was unthawed and the birds were enjoying the water. It definitely takes the cold and works thereafter.

              This is a sealed disc, ca. 15x2 cm. It will fit in most bird baths apart from very small ones. Easy to clean. A short (30 cm.) cord should be connected to an exterior, grounded extension cord. Instructions note that temp. is maintained at about 38F, which seems to be correct. This comparatively low temp. reduces evaporation in cold, windy conditions. We live in northern Minnesota and have tested this for temps from -20 to +40F(-29 to+4 C). Below 0 F (-18C), ice will form on the edge of the birdbath (40 cm. diam.); at -20F (-29C), over half the surface is ice-covered.The device is stable, but a small rock placed on top will further anchor it and provide a perch for small birds.
              Summary: Well-designed, efficient,essential for birders in many northern States and Canadian Provinces.

              Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
